Hear what former campers, families, and staff have to say

Open Hearts Camp is so special to me because of the many life-long friendships, fun activities, and memories I made while I was a camper. When I first went to camp, I didn’t know anyone who had a heart condition like mine, and now I have made so many lifelong friends who also have a heart condition like mine. The many activities at camp, like kick the cone, and the campfires made camp so special because everyone was able to participate no matter what and we had so much fun in every activity that we did. I made so many fun memories while I was at Open Hearts Camp, and someday I hope to become a counselor so I can help create the same experience that I had as a camper for new campers in the years to come.

“The best two weeks of my life every year. Some of the most memorable times: Getting lost playing hide-n-seek, playing softball on the boy’s team, capture the flag, and hiking. I always went first session because who could wait that long to go to camp.

Open Hearts Camp was the highlight of summer. It was such a special place, like a home away from home. As soon as I left the last day all I would think about is the next year and what fun things I would do or who I would meet. The feeling of driving down the long driveway to be greeted by running and smiling people awaiting me is a feeling I couldn’t ever describe. Everyone deserves a place that they’re not only welcomed at, but wanted and waited for. To be around people who have had similar hardships to either talk about if you want or ignore entirely because they won’t even ask you why you have scars or why you’re different because we are all different together. That’s normal for us. The friendships I’ve made here are ever-lasting. I tear up thinking about it! Madden will always have a place in my heart of being the most welcoming home away from home.

When I think of MOHC I think of the very best in my childhood. I remember counting down the days once school got out to camp. I remember feeling fully accepted for the first time in my life at MOHC, where I wasn’t labeled as “the sick kid” because everyone else bore the same scars I do. I could just be me and my fellow campers and the staff not only encouraged that but loved it. The friendships made I still cherish to this day. The counselors and directors loved on me and challenged me to become a better human being. My experiences there greatly impacted who I am today. I could go on and on, but MOHC is an incredibly special and unique place.

The single most positive, influential, and inspiring place I experienced while growing up.
