Open Hearts Camp Counselors experience summer camp to the max. Pool parties, Hiking, cabin chats, off-camp adventures, campfires, and so much more!

Develop new skills working with some of the  most amazing campers you’ll ever meet.

The Open Hearts Camp is looking for counselors ready to work in a dynamic medical camp. While all of our campers have had open heart surgeries, they are all ready to have the time of their life at camp. All of our activities are augmented to support our campers, and counselors have a lot of space to think magically and creatively with activity design.

Our counselors gain the experience of working with a unique camper population and can utilize the skills, experience, and memories to jump-start into a healthcare related field.

Folks who are looking to head into pediatric fields, such as future nurses, doctors, occupational and physical therapists, child life specialists, and social workers are highly encouraged to apply.

Who are we looking for?

You!

Everything You wanted to know about being a counselor at the Open hearts Camp, and weren’t afraid to ask.

  • Yes!
Our pay scale is competitive to major camps in the region. In addition to a summer salary, all meals, and lodging are covered by the camp.

  • Having an open heart surgery is not a requirement to be a counselor.

    That’s just for our campers.

Some counselors have other health related needs. It will be important for you to share with us these needs so we can ensure you have a safe and fun summer.

  • Yes!

Counselors get one activity period off per day. Usually 1.5 hours. In addition, during our 12 day sessions, counselors get a full 24 hours off. Starting at 7am - 7am the next day.

  • Having had experience working with children could certainly help your application, however it is not strictly required. Many people have experiences with youth that include family members, volunteering, and school clubs.

It can be a lot to have campers depend on you for basic needs, as well as running activities, and being a collaborative teammate. Typically, people who have experience working with children have learned some of these skills.

A great counselor staff includes folks who have many different skills and life experiences.

  • Yes!

Many campers want to give back to a community that helped them feel seen and supported. Additionally, being a past camper does not automatically qualify someone to be a counselor. We’re looking for individuals who have built the skills needed to be a great counselor.

  • Great Barrington, and the surrounding Berkshire County, is home to an amazing array of natural beauty and quaint New England towns. Staff often enjoy hiking Monument Mountain, visiting the Appalachian Trail, heading into town for coffee, and visiting Pittsfield for shopping. Tanglewood is just 10 minutes away, as well as museums, restaurants, botanical gardens, and coffee shops.

  • Yes!

The camp reimburses counselors up to $300.00 in travel expenses, in addition to the salary.

  • The two closest airports are 1) Albany, NY, and 2) Hartford, CT.
The camp will arrange to pick you up at the airport, and drive you back to the airport after camp season.

  • Our chef will work with you to make sure you have wonderful and nutritious food options throughout the summer. Most meals can be supplemented with vegetables instead of meat. Our chef is also familiar with diets related to health conditions. It will be important for you to share with us your needs so we can ensure you have a great summer.

  • Yes!

We can tailor a letter of recommendation to your specific field. Our MD medical supervisor and board member can also add weight to a committee letter. We work to ensure that our counselors’ efforts are reflected and their brilliant contributions to our camp shine.
